When carriage is permitted, vapes and spare lithium cells belong only in cabin baggage; protect spare cells individually against short circuits, secure devices against activation and remove them from bags checked at the gate. The airflow setting controls how much air passes through the atomizer toward the coil. It affects draw resistance, cooling, temperature and aerosol density; openings should stay within their designed adjustment and remain free of fingers, debris or accessories.

Battery replacement applies only to devices designed for removable cells. Only the specified cell type with intact insulation and adequate current capability is suitable; loose batteries must never share a pocket or bag with metal objects.

Breaking in a coil

Breaking in a new coil means beginning the first puffs cautiously within its recommended power range so the wick can settle and saturate evenly. It does not justify power outside that range; the manufacturer specification remains controlling.

Burnt taste

Burnt taste often indicates a scorched or spent wick, excessive power or inadequate liquid flow. Continuing to vape will not repair it; the device, setting and coil should cool and be checked before any further use.

Chain vaping

Chain vaping means taking many puffs at short intervals, leaving little time for the coil and device to cool. Heat, liquid consumption and nicotine intake may rise while the wick dries; overheating or unusual taste warrants stopping use.

Charging time

Charging time is the period a battery needs to reach its intended charge level under approved conditions. It varies with capacity, charging electronics, power supply and temperature; unusually slow charging or substantial heat warrants stopping and checking the setup.

Check atomizer

Check atomizer asks for inspection of the atomizer because the device detects an implausible resistance or connection error. Coil seating, contacts and compatibility should be checked with power off; damaged components must not remain in use.

Cloud chasing

Cloud chasing means producing unusually large aerosol clouds through open airflow, high liquid flow and usually increased power. It is not a performance benchmark; technical limits, battery load, obstructed visibility and exposure of nearby people all require consideration.

Coil compatibility means a heating head has the correct shape, connection, resistance, material and power range for the specific device and tank. Similar dimensions or a fitting thread are not enough; model lists and manufacturer approval are decisive.

Coil lifespan

Coil lifespan is the period of use before a heating head or wick needs replacement because of wear, deposits or changed flavour. It depends on liquid, power, puff frequency and care, so no fixed number applies to every setup.

Coil replacement

Coil replacement exchanges a spent heating head for an explicitly compatible part. The device should be off and cool while the manufacturer procedure is followed; after installation, the new wick needs sufficient time to saturate fully.

Coil short

Coil short reports a detected short circuit or abnormally low coil resistance. Do not continue firing; with power off, coil installation, insulators and contacts require checking, while damaged components should be replaced rather than improvised upon.

Condensation

Condensation forms when some aerosol turns back into liquid on cooler surfaces in the mouthpiece or air path. Small amounts can be normal; permitted routine cleaning prevents buildup, while unusually large amounts may indicate a leak.

Contact cleaning

Contact cleaning removes dry residue from electrical interfaces between device, pod, atomizer or battery. Power must be off and fluid must not enter the device; corrosion, scorch marks or loose contacts require assessment before any further use.

Device lock

A device lock disables firing, selected settings or all controls depending on the model. It reduces accidental operation but does not make a device childproof or replace powered-off transport and storage beyond the reach of minors.

Dry hit

A dry hit occurs when the coil heats while the wick lacks enough liquid. Typical signs are a dry, harsh or burnt taste; use should stop immediately.

DTL (direct to lung)

DTL means direct to lung: aerosol is inhaled directly in an open draw. It commonly uses airier atomizers, lower resistance and higher power.

Five-click lock

A five-click lock is a common control sequence where five rapid button presses lock or unlock a device. It is not identical on every model; display or LED feedback and the manual confirm whether the lock is actually active.

Flavour chasing

Flavour chasing describes settings and draw styles intended to make flavour perception more pronounced. Coil, temperature, airflow and liquid affect the result; an intense sensation is subjective and does not demonstrate purity or absence of health risk.

Flavour fade

Flavour fade means an e-liquid tastes weaker or different over time. An ageing coil, deposits, low liquid supply, device settings or sensory adaptation may contribute; the term evaluates neither product purity nor a person's health.

Flooding

Flooding means excess liquid has entered the coil chamber or air path and interferes with normal vaporisation. Gurgling, spitback or leaking often follows; fill level, seals, coil seating and draw style should be checked for the model.

Gurgling

Gurgling is an audible liquid sound in the airflow path, usually because condensation or excess e-liquid has collected there. It may indicate overfilling, flooding or a failed seal; model-specific cleaning and a leak check help identify the cause.

Harsh hit

A harsh hit is an unpleasantly sharp sensation in the mouth or throat. Excess power, a dry wick, liquid composition or nicotine strength may contribute technically; persistent or severe symptoms are not merely a setting issue and warrant medical assessment.

Indoor vaping

Indoor vaping disperses aerosol within a limited and often shared volume of air. In Germany, possible statutory smoking restrictions are joined by house rules, workplace policies and operator decisions; without clear permission, vaping indoors should be avoided.

Leak check

A leak check examines the tank, pod, fill closure and seals for escaping liquid. It is especially useful after filling or replacing parts; visible cracks, pinched O-rings or recurring leaks argue against continued operation until resolved.

Leaking is e-liquid escaping uncontrollably from a tank or pod through seals, fill port or airflow path. Incorrect assembly, cracks, temperature changes or unsuitable viscosity may contribute; contact with electronics or battery requires stopping and assessment.

Liquid compatibility describes whether an e-liquid's viscosity, composition and nicotine strength suit the intended tank, pod and coil. Mixtures that are too thick or thin can disrupt wicking or sealing; both product label and device manual require checking.

Liquid consumption is the amount of e-liquid a system aerosolises over a period or per puff. Power, coil, airflow and draw duration influence it; an unusually rapid level drop may indicate leakage rather than consumption.

Long draw

A long draw keeps the heater active for a larger portion of the permitted puff time. It may create more heat and aerosol but places greater demand on liquid feed and coil; the device cut-off must never be bypassed.

Low battery

Low battery indicates that remaining cell voltage or charge is insufficient for the requested operation. The approved charging method or a suitable replacement cell is needed; repeated warnings may indicate ageing or a fault requiring assessment.

Misfire

A misfire occurs when a device heats late, irregularly or not at all after input, or interprets a control incorrectly. Causes range from contacts to electronics; repeated behaviour should not be overridden by continued button presses or draws.

MTL (mouth to lung)

MTL means mouth to lung: aerosol is drawn into the mouth first and then inhaled into the lungs. It typically uses a tighter draw, higher resistance and lower power.

No atomizer

No atomizer is a device message indicating that no electrically detectable atomizer is connected. Incompatibility, dirty contacts, loose seating or a fault may cause it; the device should not fire until the connection is resolved.

Pod cleaning

Pod cleaning means caring for a reusable pod according to its manufacturer instructions. External condensation can be removed, but integrated coils and electrical contact areas must not be rinsed indiscriminately; damaged or persistently leaking pods require replacement.

Pod compatibility

Pod compatibility exists when the shell shape, latch, contacts, air path and any integrated coil are intended for the device model. A pod that appears to fit may differ electrically or mechanically; the exact product identifier decides.

Pod replacement

Pod replacement means changing the complete liquid reservoir or pod unit in a compatible system. Wear, leakage or a spent integrated coil may prompt it; seals and contacts should be fitted undamaged and dry.

Primer puff

A primer puff is a short preparatory draw used with some systems to support liquid flow toward the wick, sometimes without activating heat. Whether it is intended depends on the device; manufacturer instructions take priority over habit.

Priming a coil

Priming means fully saturating the wick of a new coil with suitable liquid before its first heating. Observing the wait time stated in the manual helps avoid dry areas; it cannot restore a wick that is already burnt.

Puff duration

Puff duration measures the time from the start to the end of one activation or inhalation. Longer puffs usually increase energy and liquid delivery; the automatic cut-off is a safety limit and must not be bypassed through repeated triggering.

RDL (restricted direct lung)

RDL sits between MTL and open DTL. The draw goes directly to the lungs but remains noticeably more restricted because airflow is limited.

Refilling

Refilling is adding compatible e-liquid to a tank or pod designed for that purpose. The fill port and maximum level are model-specific; spilled liquid, overfilling and fluid in the air channel can cause leaks or malfunctions.

Second-hand aerosol

Second-hand aerosol is the mixture of exhaled aerosol and substances entering the surrounding air. It is not merely water vapour and may contain nicotine, carriers, particles or flavour constituents; composition and amount vary by product and use.

Short draw

A short draw activates the heater for only a brief period and usually produces less aerosol than a long draw. The actual result depends on draw sensor, power, airflow and coil rather than duration alone.

Slow draw

A slow draw moves air steadily through the atomizer at a lower speed. It can stabilise the draw in MTL systems designed for it, but insufficient airflow may reduce cooling, so device guidance remains decisive.

Spitback

Spitback is hot or warm liquid droplets leaving the mouthpiece instead of fully aerosolising. A flooded coil, unsuitable low power or condensation may cause it; repeated spitback warrants stopping use and checking the system.

Storage

Storage means keeping the device, batteries and liquids safely while they are not in use. In Germany they should remain dry, cool, protected from sunlight and inaccessible to children and animals; manufacturer guidance and protected battery storage still apply.

Sub-ohm vaping

Sub-ohm describes vaping with coil resistance below 1 ohm. These systems often use higher power and greater airflow and liquid flow; device, battery and coil must be designed for it.

Tank cleaning

Tank cleaning removes liquid residue and deposits from a reservoir designed to be dismantled. Only removable, unpowered parts identified in the manual should be cleaned appropriately and dried fully; electronics, batteries and unsuitable seals do not belong in water.

Temperature setting

The temperature setting limits calculated coil temperature in compatible temperature-control systems rather than setting only wattage. It works solely with supported wire material and a correct baseline resistance; the display is not a direct medical or laboratory-grade measurement.

Thread cleaning

Thread cleaning removes dust and liquid residue from mechanical screw connections such as a 510 connector. It is performed on a powered-off device with material-compatible means; bent, worn or electrically damaged threads need expert assessment rather than cleaning.

Tight draw

A tight draw results from restricted airflow and greater draw resistance. It is typical of many MTL devices; air channels should not be accidentally blocked because intended cooling and draw-sensor operation may depend on them.

Transport lock

A transport lock is intended to prevent accidental activation of a vape device while carried. Depending on the model it blocks the fire button, draw sensor or controls; it does not replace a protective case or safe packing of loose batteries.

Travelling with a vape

Travelling with a vape requires transport-safe packing of the device, liquids and batteries plus checking carrier and destination rules. Age, import, possession and use laws may differ from Germany; current official information should be consulted before departure.

Upright storage

Upright storage keeps a tank or pod with its fill port and mouthpiece facing upward. This may reduce leakage in some designs but cannot replace intact seals; the correct position depends on manufacturer guidance and transport state.

Vape etiquette means considerate conduct toward people who do not wish to encounter aerosol. Before vaping, check house rules, local restrictions and consent; distance, ventilation and refraining in confined or shared spaces reduce conflict and exposure.

Vaper's tongue is an informal term for temporarily reduced flavour perception while vaping, often associated with sensory adaptation or dry mouth. It is not a diagnosis; new or persistent loss of taste or smell should receive medical assessment.

Wattage setting

The wattage setting determines the electrical power a regulated device supplies to the coil. It must remain within the range stated for both coil and device; excessive or unsuitable power can cause overheating, dry hits and premature wear.
