E-liquid

Editorial status: Aug 7, 2026Short article18+
In simple terms

E-liquid is the fluid heated in an e-cigarette. Common ingredients include propylene glycol, glycerine, flavourings and optional nicotine; the specific product label is always decisive.

01

Classification

E-liquid describes a liquid format – the way a product is bottled, dosed or finished before use. Format and container size are directly linked to labelling obligations and the permitted nicotine strength. In this glossary, E-liquid deliberately sits close to Nicotine-free liquid, because the two are regularly conflated in everyday language.

02

Practical relevance

When buying, E-liquid decides how much preparation is required and how long a product can sensibly be stored. The format also determines how precisely a desired nicotine strength can be reached at all. Together with 50/50 liquid, E-liquid is one of the points where factual information and advertising promises separate most clearly.

03

Handling it safely

Always store products in E-liquid form sealed, out of children's reach and away from food. Decanting into unlabelled containers is a common cause of mix-ups and must be avoided. If anything around E-liquid changes – smell, warmth, sound or weight – that is a reason to check, not a detail.

04

Not to be confused with

Searching for E-liquid often leads to Nicotine-free liquid or 50/50 liquid; the terms overlap thematically but do not mean the same thing. Once the three terms are cleanly separated, datasheets and product pages read much faster and lead to fewer mistaken purchases.

Frequently asked questions

How should E-liquid be classified?
Within Liquids & ingredients, E-liquid describes a fixed property, not a quality tier. Two products with the same specification can differ considerably in build, features and approval.
What really matters with E-liquid?
What matters most with E-liquid is the combination: device, consumable and liquid have to match. Individually good figures do not help if one element is out of line.
Do E-liquid and High-PG liquid belong together?
They belong together insofar as High-PG liquid often describes the precondition for or the consequence of E-liquid. For a purchase decision you should still check both specifications separately.
